Mattress Size Comparison: US, UK & EU Beds

Compare US, UK and EU mattress dimensions from twin to king. Learn which international bed sizes match and how to choose the right mattress across regions.

Mattress sizes vary significantly between the US, UK and EU, even when they share the same name. A US King and a UK King are entirely different dimensions, and EU sizes follow their own metric-based system. Whether you are moving internationally, ordering bedding from abroad, or buying a new mattress online, understanding these differences is essential. Our Mattress/Bed Size Converter lets you compare dimensions across all three systems instantly.

US Mattress Sizes vs UK Mattress Sizes

US mattresses are measured in inches and range from Twin (39 by 75 inches) to California King (72 by 84 inches). UK mattresses use inches as well but follow different naming conventions — a UK Single is 36 by 75 inches, a UK Double is 54 by 75 inches, and a UK King is 60 by 78 inches. The key difference is that UK beds are generally shorter and narrower than their US counterparts with the same name, which matters most for tall sleepers.

EU Mattress Sizes: The Metric Standard

EU mattress sizes are measured in centimeters and vary somewhat by country, but common standards include 90 by 200 cm (single), 140 by 200 cm (double), 160 by 200 cm (queen), and 180 by 200 cm (king). These metric dimensions do not map perfectly to US or UK inch-based sizes, so a 140 by 200 cm EU double is slightly narrower and longer than a UK Double. Choosing the Right Size for Your Room

A mattress should leave at least 24 inches of clearance on each side for comfortable movement and at least 36 inches at the foot if you have a dresser or wall. Measure your room in both inches and centimeters before deciding on a size, and remember that the same room dimensions may accommodate different mattress sizes depending on which regional sizing system you use.
