Belt Size vs Waist Size: Why They're Not the Same Number
Learn why belt size and waist size are not the same number, how the plus-two rule works and how to convert waist measurements to belt sizes.
Belt size and waist size are related, but they are not usually identical. A belt needs extra length to pass through loops and buckle comfortably near the middle hole. Use the Belt Size Converter to turn waist measurements into belt labels.
The Plus-Two Rule
The standard shortcut is to add two inches to your pant waist or measured waist. A 32 inch waist usually needs a 34 inch belt, and a 36 inch waist usually needs a 38 inch belt. This works for many casual belts, but check brand charts for dress belts and designer labels.
Measure Where the Belt Sits
Some people wear belts at the natural waist, while others wear them lower on the hips. Measure at the actual belt position over the clothing you plan to wear. This is more reliable than using a trouser label alone.
Choose the Middle Hole Fit
A good belt should fasten near the middle hole, leaving room to tighten or loosen. If you are between sizes, choose the larger belt if it has multiple holes or can be shortened by a leatherworker.
