Belt Size Guide: Waist to Belt Conversion

Convert your waist measurement to a belt size using the plus-two rule. US, EU and UK belt size chart with tips for finding the perfect fit every time.

Finding the right belt size does not have to be guesswork. The standard rule for belt sizing is simple: your belt size should be about two inches larger than your pant waist size. If you wear a 34-inch waist, you need a 36-inch belt. This plus-two rule gives you enough strap past the buckle and a few adjustment holes to work with. Our Belt Size Converter handles the conversion between US inches and EU centimeters automatically.

How to Measure Your Belt Size

The most accurate way to find your belt size is to measure a belt that already fits you well. Lay it flat on a table and measure from the inside of the buckle (where the buckle folds) to the hole you use most often. That distance in inches is your belt size. If you do not have a belt to measure, take your pant waist size and add two inches — a 32-inch waist becomes a 34-inch belt. Use our Belt Size Converter to double-check your measurement against US and EU sizing charts.

US vs EU vs UK Belt Sizing

US and UK belt sizes both use inches and follow the plus-two rule, but some UK brands list the pant waist size on the tag rather than the belt length. EU belts are measured in centimeters and also follow the plus-two convention — a 90 cm EU belt roughly matches a 34-inch pant waist. Our Belt Size Converter lets you toggle between all three systems so you can shop internationally with confidence.

Belt Width and Style Considerations

Belt width matters almost as much as length. Dress belts are typically 1 to 1.5 inches wide and fit standard trouser loops, while casual and work belts range from 1.5 to 2 inches. Make sure your belt loops can accommodate the width before buying. Thicker leather belts also take longer to break in, so a slightly snug fit at first will loosen over time as the leather molds to your waist.
